Catastrophes in Asia

I wanted to write something about food today, but I don’t feel like I can…I have something else that’s weighing on my mind and I figure I should write about that instead. It’s the fact that so many explosions have occurred in Asia this year, for various reasons. Earlier this week, someone set off a bomb in Bangkok and before that there was the explosion at the chemical warehouse in Tianjin, China. And before that there was the dust explosion at an amusement park in Taiwan. Add to these the plane that crashed in Indonesia and it seems like Asia is one big disaster zone right now.

I don’t know…I guess I’m bothered by it all. It’s hard to say exactly why. I mean, disasters like these are always horrifying but I’m half a world away. I guess it bothers me because I’ve been planning to visit Asia (though admittedly I’m still in the ‘thinking about it’ stage) and it seems like no matter where you go in Asia, there will be a catastrophe waiting for you.

But it’s not just that. With proper precautions, the explosion in Tianjin could have been prevented. And a little knowledge of combustible dust explosions could have headed off the Taiwan amusement park blast. Lots of lives could have been saved with a little foresight. I just wish things were better in Asia. I wish workers enjoyed greater protections from things like this. And I don’t want to read about amusement parks blowing up because of corn starch. Well, maybe things will get better in time.

But not soon enough.
